With good communication links, especially in the form of the M5 Motorway and the A303 crossing the County from east to west, and major suppliers particularly in the food and drink sector, and the other key sectors, needing to get their product out to UK and international markets, Somerset has a very strong and robust transport and distribution sector.
“At our Bridgwater facility we process and distribute around 500 million litres of fresh liquid milk annually. The location is perfect due to the proximity not only to one of the country’s most productive milk fields but also the arterial motorway links allowing the efficient distribution of our milk across the South of England.”
Billy Keane, Managing Director Robert Wiseman Dairies
The expertise within the sector, made up of well-established home grown family firms, such as Framptons of Shepton Mallet, Peter Green of Evercreech, Keedwell of Highbridge, and other big players like Wincanton Logistics and DHL ensures that warehousing and logistics for national distribution is an important contributor to the local economy with a well trained workforce readily available.
Major developments in the past 5 years include that of the eye-catching Morrisons Regional Distribution Centre on the edge of Bridgwater, adjacent to the M5. The Willow Green Morrisons Centre is over 750,000 sq feet in size and provides employment for 800 staff working hard to get product from the Centre out to the Morrisons stores across the region and beyond. Built to a sustainable and energy efficient design specification the new building achieved a BREEAM Excellent status.
With land and sites readily available, it’s likely that Somerset will see more Distribution Centres and Transport companies growing in the near future.
