Government broadband investment brings Somerset up to speed

Posted: 27/5/11

A multi-million pound government investment in Somerset’s superfast broadband connection has been welcomed by Into Somerset Chief Executive Rupert Cox, who says it will increase Somerset’s competitiveness for inward investors, boosting the region’s economy.

Cox commented, “This is excellent news for Somerset. Faster broadband is one of the keys to unlocking the county’s £9b economy to the global economy and this investment will certainly help to improve Somerset’s competitive edge for inward investors.

“Reliable fast broadband has consistently been top of the wish-list for the business community. Two way flow of e-communication is of paramount importance and this investment completes the exceptional package that Somerset already offers businesses and inward investors looking for a new base.”

The government’s investment in superfast broadband means that 85% of premises in Somerset will benefit from a guaranteed broadband speed of 20MB per second. Even the remaining 15% in the most remote locations will be guaranteed 2MB per second where they currently may have no broadband at all, reinforcing the fact that Somerset is well and truly ‘open for business’.

Into Somerset was part of the group of organisations involved in the bid last month and confirmation of the investment came through overnight. A total of £30m of government funding has been allocated for Somerset and Devon, which have also recently received approval for their combined ‘Heart of the South West’ Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Somerset is a prime location for inward investment due to its excellent road and rail links, meaning London is only two hours away, whilst a choice of international airports mean that Europe and the rest of the world are within easy reach. Many entrepreneurs are also attracted to Somerset because of its cost-effective commercial property, which tends to be at least a third cheaper than in London and the South East.

Into Somerset offers a tailored business relocation service, giving advice and information to facilitate the process.
