Chard's Numatic International manufactures a wide range of cleaning equipment for the domestic, commercial and industrial markets including the world famous Henry the vacuum cleaner. Innovative products are developed and manufactured using the latest computerised technology. Rigorous testing plus years of experience ensure efficient operation and a long working life. Founded in 1969, the company employs almost 1000 people and has just reported growth in sales and pre-tax profit, boosted by strong sales in both the UK and overseas.
From Insider Business SW 19 September 2016:
Chris Duncan, founder and owner of Numatic International, told Insider the company is optimistic for the future post-Brexit although market confidence has been affected in the short term. According to accounts for Numatic International Ltd, turnover grew to £137.4m in the year to 31 December 2015, up from £129.1m in 2014. Pre-tax profit also increased to £12.9m from £10m the year before.
Work began on the manufacturer's new 60,000 sq ft central warehouse facility in Chard, Somerset, during the period and this was completed during 2016
Chris Duncan said 2015/16 had been a good one for the business, while investments made during the period have strengthened its manufacturing and product base for 2017/18.
The currently financial year is said to have initially been affected by uncertainties surrounding Brexit with 'unanswered questions' undermining market confidence in the short term. However, the European market remains buoyant and export activities are expected to compensate for the fragility in the UK
Duncan said: "Having built a business pre the Common Market, and lived through the many vagaries of the last 30 years within the community, we have no fears of returning to a degree of national independence.
"The bigger question today is the future of the EU as it stands as it does not appear to have as strong a consensus as was once thought. If it starts to crumble we are best to be on the outside looking in as the complications could be quite enormous trying to unravel the needs of a number of countries parting simultaneously.
"We can cope with our own individual exit much easier than by being part of a major restructuring of the community as we know it now."
Numatic International is not the only world-leading business located in the vicinity. Just down the road in Crewkerne is the home to Ariel Motors Limited - manufacturers of one of the world's fastest accelerating cars. The companies draw on the skilled workforce to be found in the South Somerset area - where aerospace and related engineering companies cluster together.
