Hilton Herbs has built up an enthusiasm and commitment to natural healthcare products for animals and turned it into an international business turning over more than £1million a year.
The business, which was founded in 1990, produces herbal and complementary healthcare products for animals – especially horses and dogs. Three years later, needing larger premises, the company moved from near Guilford, Surrey, to Downclose Farm, in North Perrott, Somerset.
Director Hilary Self says, “We relocated because we had outgrown our existing premises and were looking for bigger premises that would allow us to develop and expand the business. Somerset provides reasonably quick access to main routes around the country for distribution of product and access to trade/public shows.”
All Hilton Herbs employees are local people, some of whom have been with the business for more than a decade and Somerset’s quality of life brings definite benefits. “Living in a rural community is very important both socially and business-wise. Our hobbies revolve around our horses, dogs, fishing and love of the countryside.“Our employees tend to be horse and dog owners and come from rural backgrounds, giving them a natural interest in the products they manufacture,” says Hilary.
“The quality of life offered to rural Somerset-based businesses provides an exciting and stimulating environment for all employees. You are never more than an hour from the coast and a ten minute drive from any of the major towns leaves you in rolling landscapes offering a multitude of rural pursuits.
“For those Hilton Herbs employees with children, there are a multitude of excellent schools and colleges to choose from in Somerset. And in fact, a number of Hilton Herbs staff members are pursuing work-related studies.” Hilton Herbs has received help and advice from Business Link, UKTI and other business support groups.
